Winter in The Mat-Su follows a different set of rules.
The Light
While the days are shorter, the quality of light is unparalleled. Expect 5–6 hours of functional daylight in mid-winter, providing a constant sunset glow that’s perfect for photography.
The Gear
Layering is the Alaskan traveler’s best friend. Think moisture-wicking base layers, insulating mid-layers, and windproof outer shells. Many of our local partners offer gear rentals to help keep you warm and mobile.
Respect the Frontier
Winter is a stressful time for moose. They often use plowed roads and packed trails to save energy. Give them a wide berth and never attempt to “shoo” them off a trail. If you are heading into the backcountry, be sure to check the Hatcher Pass Avalanche Center and carry the proper rescue gear.
