Scenic Drives Through The Mat-Su
The journey is never just a means to an end in Alaska. Our highway systems and backroads are corridors of discovery, carving through some of the most dramatic terrain in the Great Land. Stretching from the coastal flats of the Knik Arm to the towering heights of the Alaska Range, these routes offer a front-row seat to glaciers, river canyons, and historic frontier outposts.
The Glenn Highway
Winding east from the valley floor toward Sutton and Glacier View, the Glenn Highway National Scenic Byway is a masterpiece of geological drama. Flanked by the Chugach Mountains to the south and the Talkeetna Mountains to the north, this route offers unparalleled access to the Matanuska Glacier. As the road climbs toward Eureka Summit, the forest thins to reveal wide-open tundra and the ancient, sculptural power of the Matanuska River carved deep into the canyon floor.
Protect Our Roads
Help ensure these corridors remain pristine by utilizing designated pullouts for photography and respecting local residents and wildlife. Observe speed limit and view animals from a distance.
Check the Conditions
Safety is a key component of a successful journey. Because weather can shift rapidly in the mountains, utilize our weather and road resources for real-time conditions, updates, and closures.
The Parks Highway
The Parks Highway is the lifeline of the Northern Mat-Su, leading travelers through a transition of landscapes. After passing through the bustling hubs of Wasilla and Houston, the road enters the quiet, lake-dotted forests of Willow. Further north at Trapper Creek, the horizon is dominated by the Alaska Range. This stretch, known as the Denali Corridor, provides the most consistent and breathtaking views of North America’s tallest peak, all while paralleling the mighty Susitna River.
Alpine Passes & Frontier Backroads
For those who want to leave the main highways behind, The Mat-Su offers rugged alternatives that reach deep into the backcountry.
