Ice Caves
Carved by meltwater and sculpted by the immense pressure of the moving ice, these glacial caves are temporary cathedrals of deep, neon blue that was formed centuries ago. In a constant state of flux, caves are born, they transform, and they eventually collapse as the glacier breathes and flows. For those who venture beyond the pavement, entering an ice cave is more than a hike. It’s a rare privilege to stand inside a geological moment that may not exist tomorrow.
The Matanuska Glacier
Located in Glacier View, the Matanuska is one of the most accessible glaciers in the world. Because the Matanuska is a grounded glacier (resting on land rather than water), its caves and crevasses are often more stable and easier to reach. While winter offers the most stable conditions for cave exploration, our guides can often find safe, breathtaking blue ice features throughout the summer months.
Guides Are Mandatory
Never attempt to enter an ice cave without a professional, certified guide. Glaciers are constantly moving, and a guide’s job is to read the ice, monitor for overhead hazards, and ensure you have the proper gear (helmets, crampons, and harnesses).
Transient Beauty
Because these caves are formed by the elements, they can disappear or become unsafe in a matter of days. Respect your guide’s decision if a particular cave is off-limits. The ice always has the final say.
Leave No Trace
The blue ice is a pristine environment. Ensure that nothing is left behind, and avoid touching the cave walls, as the oils from your hands can affect the delicate crystalline surface.
The Knik Glacier
For those seeking a more remote expedition, the Knik Glacier at the head of the Knik River Valley offers a rugged, deep-wilderness experience. Since there are no roads to the Knik, your journey begins with an airboat ride or a scenic flight. The Knik ice caves are massive and often found in more dramatic, vertical landscapes. Exploring here feels like standing on the edge of the world, surrounded by the peaks of the Chugach Mountains.
