Dog Sledding the Alaskan Trails
The sound of a dog team’s rhythmic breathing and the shush of runners on snow is the heartbeat of the wilderness in The Mat-Su. Known as the Dog Mushing Capital of the World, our region is the epicenter of this ancient and Alaskan tradition. This is a living heritage where world-champion mushers train their elite canine athletes across thousands of miles of interconnected trails. Whether you are standing on the runners for the first time or visiting a legendary kennel, dog sledding offers an unparalleled connection to the land and the animals that helped build the north.
The Mushing Capital
As the official restart location for the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, Willow becomes a global stage every March. Meet the dogs, learn about their specialized nutrition and training, and hear firsthand stories from mushers who have tackled the 1,000-mile trail to Nome. Most kennel tours include the chance to meet the newest members of the team, offering a glimpse into the socialization and care required to raise an elite athlete.
Trail Etiquette
If you are out on a multi-use trail (like those in Nancy Lake or Hatcher Pass) and encounter a dog team, yield the right of way. Pull over, keep your own pets restrained, and wait for the team to pass. This helps ensure the safety of the mushers, the dogs, and you.
Year-Round Adventures
Alaskan huskies live to run, and our teams have adapted to the seasons to keep the mushing spirit alive 365 days a year. From 30-minute introductory rides to multi-day expeditions, winter is the classic time to experience the trail. When the snow melts, training continues. Specialized carts or ATVs allow you to feel the raw pulling power of a team even in the height of the Midnight Sun.
