Government Peak Recreation Area
Government Peak Recreation Area (GPRA) is the region’s premier purpose-built playground in Hatcher Pass. Located at the southern edge of the Talkeetna Mountains near Palmer and Wasilla, GPRA is where the spirit of the Valley finds its flow. Designed for athletes and families alike, GPRA serves as a recreational hub for the community, offering a modern chalet, paved access, and a trail system that transitions seamlessly from the lush birch forests of the lower slopes to the rugged alpine tundra of the peak.
Summer Flow
When the snow melts, GPRA transforms into a haven for rubber and dirt.
Mountain Biking
Home to some of the finest singletrack in Alaska, the trails here are a masterpiece of modern trail building. From the berms and rollers of the backcountry loops to technical climbs that test your grit, GPRA offers a ride for every skill level.
Hiking
For those who prefer foot power, the trail to the summit is a legendary challenge. It is a steep climb that gains over 3,500 feet, rewarding hikers with a 360-degree view of the Matanuska Valley, Cook Inlet, and the towering peaks of the Chugach Range.
Winter Glide
When winter arrives, GPRA becomes the epicenter of The Mat-Su’s ice and engine-free culture.
Cross-Country Skiing
With trails designed by former Olympian Bill Spencer, this network of groomed trails offers classic and skate skiing. The trails are meticulously maintained by the Mat-Su Ski Club, ensuring high-quality adventures on the snow from first frost to spring thaw.
Family Fun & Night Trails
Don’t let the short winter days stop the adventure. GPRA features several miles of lighted trails and a warming facility. The area also features a dedicated sledding hill near the chalet, making it the perfect winter basecamp for explorers of all ages.
