Holiday Tree Tour

Here’s an exciting holiday event for everyone from the avid cross-country skier to the casual trail enthusiast! On December 23 from 4-7p.m., the Mat-Su Ski Club is hosting a tour of beautifully decorated trees along the Pioneer Loop trail at the Government Peak Recreation Area.

Famous for its world class ski trails, Government Peak welcomes winter hikers and bikers, too. At the Holiday Tree Tour, you can hike, bike, snowshoe or ski the trail and enjoy festively twinkling trees, fun company, and warm drinks! Though this annual event is only a few years old, it is quickly becoming a favorite among residents who just can’t get enough of the splendid outdoor winter scene in the Palmer and Hatcher Pass areas. Fifty people attended the very first Holiday Tree Tour, but the very next year that number shot up to 600! Exploring winter trails full of dazzling holiday lights is just the thing none of us knew we were missing during all the December festivities. And it’s absolutely free to participate!

The Pioneer Loop, one of a vast network of trails at Government Peak, is an easy trail suitable for all ages and abilities. Bring the whole family and tap into that special kind of holiday cheer that only Alaska’s wooded winter trails can provide!
