Skeetawk Ski Area
Skeetawk Ski Area is The Mat-Su Valley’s newest winter recreation opportunity. The ski area opened in December 2020 and features a triple chair lift — the first of its kind in the Borough. Hatcher Pass skiing is now a reality in The Mat-Su. Skeetawk is frequented by locals and visitors alike. The snow is excellent, and the ski area hosts a variety of community events throughout the year. The ski area is a complement to the nearby Government Peak Recreation Area, which features world-class Nordic skiing at the base of Hatcher Pass.
About the Mountain
The mountain features one triple chair lift accessing 300 vertical feet across 30 skiable acres with dozens of trails varying in skill level. At the top of the lift there is a terrain park for aspiring aerialists, and a school yard at the base of the lift for beginners. Riders interested in exploring the hundreds of acres of terrain that will eventually be accessed by future lifts can get exclusive access by booking a seat on the cabbed snowcat. Snowcat riders average seven to eight thousand feet of vertical elevation riding dynamic terrain.
Schedule of Operation
Skeetawk’s season is approximately late November to late April and open weekends during the day and select evenings during the week, and all local school district holidays. Conditions in Hatcher Pass are typically clement. As long as there’s enough snow, this south-facing slope will be active.
Future Features
Skeetawk’s development is planned in three phases, with the first phase fully completed in 2023. The nonprofit’s board of directors is hard at work planning and fundraising for the next phase which will include projects like snow making, a day lodge and education center, and the much anticipated mile-long lift to mid-mountain.
