Hatcher Pass Road & Independence Mine
A Journey Through the High Alpine
Hatcher Pass Road is a testament to the dramatic, sky-piercing beauty of the Talkeetna Mountains. Rising to an elevation of 3,886 feet, this scenic drive offers a spectacular transition from lush valley floors to jagged peaks and vibrant alpine tundra. Whether you are entering from the Palmer side or traversing the mountain toward Willow, Hatcher Pass serves as the ultimate high-altitude playground in the heart of The Mat-Su.
Independence Mine State Historical Park
The weathered wooden buildings of Independence Mine are a testament to the fearless craftsmanship and grit of the Alaskan gold-mining era. Once a bustling community that produced millions of dollars in gold, this State Historical Park now offers a window into the past. Wander through the restored manager’s house, explore the mining relics, and feel the echoes of the pioneers who shaped the history of the Mat-Su Valley.
Adventure Above the Treeline
Hatcher Pass is more than a scenic drive. It’s a year-round destination for outdoor enthusiasts.
Seasonality
The paved road to Independence Mine is open year-round, but the gravel road through the summit (connecting Palmer to Willow) is typically open from early July through late September.
Location
Access the pass via Fishhook Road from either Palmer or Wasilla.
Fees
A parking fee or an Alaska State Parks pass is required for most trailhead and mine access points.
