The 64th annual Willow State Winter Carnival kicks off this weekend, with a jam-packed schedule of events celebrating the season. Known as the dog mushing capital of the world, Willow is a great weekend destination in The Mat-Su where visitors can take dog sledding tours and get a taste of the mushing lifestyle. This is where the world famous Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race officially starts in March.
Traditionally, the Willow State Winter Carnival spans two weekends, and that’s the case again in 2026. Events run Jan. 23 – 25 and then again on Jan. 30 – Feb. 1.
Catch the fireworks show on Friday, the 30th, then stick around of a host of race events and festivities on Saturday. Throughout the carnival, the Willow Community Center will host a craft fair and the kitchen will be open. The second weekend of events includes a snowshoe softball tournament, a snomwachine poker run, kids games and a Native Youth Olympics demonstration.
